Scuba diving enthusiasts have praised the wonders of Phuket as one of the best places in Asia for divers. Apart from the enticing tropical climate, the clear waters off Phuket’s shores hold many wonders worth exploring, from coral reefs to shipwrecks to shark habitats. The best part of scuba diving in Phuket is the convenience, with regular trips to the many diving spots available for exploration.

With a wide selection of diving spots and a diverse array of marine life, Phuket is just as much of a paradise underwater as it is above ground. Here are a few things worth knowing about scuba diving in Phuket, and why it’s a popular choice among divers from all over the world.

Why Phuket Is One of The Best Scuba Diving Destinations in The World

One of the most-cited reasons for the popularity of scuba diving in Phuket is the water condition in the Andaman Sea. Underwater visibility can go from 20 to 40 meters (82-131 feet), and the water temperature can be as warm as 25 degrees Centigrade (77 degrees Fahrenheit). In addition, the currents around Phuket can be quite mild, so there’s no worries about getting carried away by the undertow.

Phuket’s tropical climate means that there’s a long season for ideal diving conditions, from November to April, which coincides with the best time to visit Phuket. It is not always recommended to go diving during monsoon season as it will affect the water visibility and access to diving spots.

Marine life can be quite diverse as well. Tropical fish are in abundance, as are seahorses, leopard sharks, nudibranchs, and hawksbill turtles. There are also seasons for spotting whale sharks and manta rays in the water, as well as the rare ornate ghost pipefish.

Best of all, divers in Phuket rave about the affordable diving fees, budget-friendly gear rentals and affordable boat rides. Still, many experienced divers choose to bring their own equipment with them on their trips over renting equipment at the site, so it’s best to use your judgement when it comes to your gear of choice.

A Selection of The Best Dive Sites in Phuket

Many divers have their favorite spots in Phuket, but these spots often show up in lists of top dive sites in the area. These destinations offer the best experiences that any diver can have underwater, from beautiful coral reefs to unique encounters with marine life.

1. Koh Racha Yai

Part of the Racha Islands, this diving destination is a 90-minute boat ride south of Phuket. Preferred by divers of all levels, Racha Yai has a depth of about 20 meters (65 feet) and is teeming with corals, reef fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Some sites on Racha Yai also have underwater structures such as elephant statues and a temple.

2. Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are another diver-friendly destination, attracting scuba divers and snorkeling enthusiasts regardless of skill level. Those who have dived in the waters off Similan have raved about the beauty of the coral reefs and the high visibility and weak currents in the water. The Similan Islands are also home to unusual underwater rock formations and boulders that are worth exploring.

3. Shark Point

True to its name, Shark Point is the ideal place to come face-to-face with leopard sharks. These creatures live near the site’s rock pinnacles, sharing their habitat with pufferfish, nudibranchs, and boxfish. Colorful corals are also present at this dive spot, which was declared a protected marine sanctuary in 1992. Because of Shark Point’s depth, this spot is recommended for experienced divers.

4. Anemone Reef

Sea anemones, sea fans, and corals are the highlight of this marine sanctuary, but you can also spot clownfish as well as turtles, snappers, and the occasional tuna or barracuda during your dive. Anemone Reef is not too far from Shark Point, and the currents are also quite strong, so it’s recommended for experienced divers as well.

5. King Cruiser Wreck

The King Cruiser catamaran ferry sank in 1997 after colliding with Anemone Reef, but its wreck now attracts a wide range of marine life such as snappers and barracudas. There are also nocturnal species in the shaded areas of the wreck, including crustaceans and moray eels. Because the waters run deep, this dive spot is best for experienced divers and shipwreck enthusiasts.
