The popularity of Niseko as a winter destination has made Hokkaido a must-visit for tourists in Japan. Tourists looking for day trip destinations beyond the slopes of Niseko are seeking out other winter resorts in the region as well.
There’s no need to drive too far to find winter resorts outside Niseko, however. These resorts take less than an hour by car to visit, and like Niseko itself, they enjoy generous amounts of powdery snow in the winter while hosting year-round activities for the whole family.

3 Winter Resorts Worth Visiting Outside Niseko
While these resorts have yet to achieve the global popularity of Niseko, they can be seen as worthy day trip destinations for those who want a temporary change of scenery. These resorts have a full menu of activities as well as dining options for visitors.
1. Moiwa

Often called “the fifth resort of Niseko” and sometimes reachable by skiing from Annupuri, Moiwa is known for its diverse terrain and relaxed atmosphere. The resort’s proximity to Niseko United also makes it an ideal day-trip destination.
Winter sports enthusiasts such as skiers and snowboarders can enjoy Moiwa’s accessible runs at every skill level. The snow quality is like Niseko’s, making it an alternative for skiers avoiding the crowds on Niseko’s slopes. Relaxed dining options for apres-ski meals are available, and so is free parking for visitors who drive in by car.
2. Rusutsu
Recommended by seasoned travelers as a relaxed alternative to Niseko, Rusutsu is only 45 minutes away by car or bus. Like Niseko, Rusutsu has generous amounts of snow in the winter, a diverse range of restaurants, and numerous activities for families year-round.
In wintertime, Rusutsu is ideal for activities such as snowboarding, dog sledding, and ice fishing. Places to visit in Rusutsu during the warmer months include onsens, flower gardens, golf courses, and an amusement park for kids.
3. Kiroro
The all-inclusive resort of Kiroro boasts of abundant powder snow and easy access to ski runs at all levels. Beginners to skiing and snowboarding may even choose to take lessons in Kiroro over Niseko’s famous slopes.
The resort is home to Kiroro Snow Activity World, where kids can enjoy winter sports in an age-appropriate environment. Outside of the winter months, Kiroro also hosts festivals and activities for guests visiting on holiday.

Things To Consider When Planning Your Day Trip

As with Sapporo and other day trip destinations from Niseko, visiting other winter resorts in Hokkaido requires much planning and thought. For example, Kiroro has English-speaking staff who may be able to assist guests that struggle with the language barrier at other places.
Checking the websites of these resorts may give you a better idea of what to expect, especially when it comes to seasonal weather conditions. Even with places that get Niseko-style powder snow, such as Moiwa and Kiroro, it’s best to check conditions before packing up for a day’s worth of activities.
Dining options are also worth mentioning here as well. Some resorts have more casual restaurants than Niseko, regardless of cuisine specialty. Be prepared to take dining arrangements at restaurants into consideration when deciding where to eat.
Finally, it is recommended to use your own transportation. Guest Experience services at your chalet may be able to arrange for a car and driver to take you on your road trip, which many resorts encourage over public transport for convenience.
